And this is why I can't pay the kids by the penny to pick up the crabapples. :)

When I was tucking Carter in he asked (as he often does) if I would snuggle by him… since if I did that every night I'd fall asleep and get nothing done, I told him (as I often do) that I couldn't, but that I would come snuggle by him when my work was done. Then he said, "Can you just snuggle by me for 20 seconds?" That sounded reasonable, so I sat on his bed and rubbed his back and started counting…
And it was amazing what that 20 seconds did for my perspective of the day, of this darling boy who won't be in star wars pjs with beginning readers and every baseball trophy he owns on his headboard for long, and of my role as his mother.
I think I should stop for 20 seconds here and there more often.

We ran up there to walk around the monuments on a gorgeous fall night…
It was fun to learn more about the Pony Express (we have relatives that live on an old pony express station on my dad's side of the family so I have seen a few of these re-enactments in my day!)
We even spotted a deer!
Too quickly it got dark and chilly but it was a fun night!

We were excited to find a pumpkin patch that was just that – a patch of pumpkins. We did not bank on how much fun would be had with the wheelbarrow. Poor Nate, who ran a 1/2 marathon that morning, ended up pulling 4 pumpkins + 4 kids… yeah, he's awesome like that.
On the hunt… Carter wanted a really round one, Meg wanted one she could pick up, Emma knew it when she saw it, and Zach was as picky as ever. It reminded me of things that make me smile about each of our kiddos – I love to watch Zach pick a pumpkin, Carter eat a Fruit by the Foot, and Emma choose prizes at Boondocks. One of a kind kiddos, that's for sure.
It was a perfect fall afternoon!

We discovered a fun little hiking area up behind one of our favorite parks this fall, and had a few good adventures there enjoying the beautiful leaves and the lizards! The first trip was just with Carter and Meg the day after he broke his arm and wasn't sure he was up to going to school.
It was so fun we had to take the big kids back the next week…
Meg pointed out every sign that said "trail closed" and said, "That sign says – TRAIL CLOSED!" She was so proud of herself.
And of course we had to take the cousins when they came down the week after that. It really is a perfect place to spend a fall afternoon!

After spending plenty of time in MN cheering on the Twins, it wasn't much of a surprise that when we showed up at tee ball organization to the news that Carter's team was the White Sox, Zach loudly declared, "Oh no, Carter – the one team you DIDN'T want to be on!" (To be fair, I don't think Carter really cared… he was so excited about the jersey, hat, and the teeball.)
Nevertheless, it was a great season. Carter had a personal bat boy (and sometimes girl) to get him ready for each at bat… batting gloves, helmet, etc. And as always, he loved running the bases and sliding into home. And even though he had to miss the last 2 games of the season with his broken arm, I don't think playing for the White Sox was bad at all.

With the opening of a new Lego store nearby, we had to take the opportunity to help a real master builder (Zach knew his name and everything) create an enormous model of the Hulk. Our job was to create big "blocks" with small blocks that the builder would use in creating the big model. Even Carter built a few, one-handed. We had a great time! And my favorite line of the day: "I could totally do this for a living." (Guess who. :)

First no wheels…
So awesome!! It was so fun to see him take off, balancing, starting on his own, turning and everything! Good thing I took a few photos, and that Dad was around to see the excitement, because after a fall off of the monkey bars at school we ended the day like this:poor little guy. Good thing once you ride a bike you never forget. :)
